Forestage Theatre, Glory

Date: Thursday 24th May
From: 19:30
Category: Theatre
Description:

Glory, by William Stanton, is a satire about the impact of a privatisation on the lives of ordinary people who are directly and indirectly affected by it. Originally there was an irony: what if all the rumours about the Post Office became real? And then they did, so in the play we have PostEx, a part of the Post Office sold off and run for profit, planning to build an office block in a run-down area of a city centre, once a heartland of industrial production and still a traditional neighbourhood. Everywhere else there is PostEx. In the middle of everything is Dot’s café, where all kinds of people come for her home cooking. Denis is a redundant toolmaker who’s looking for a lost parcel (at PostEx); Glory and Craze do advertising (for PostEx); Rachel and Benet work at PostEx, and Giles is busy buying up property in the neighbourhood (for PostEx). The café is a haven, but can it hold out against the greed of the new company? Will Denis stay long enough to allow his friendship with Dot to blossom?
